The NVIDIA CMP 170HX is becoming one of the most interesting GPUs for local AI and large language model inference—and the prices are going absolutely crazy! Just a few months ago, I bought 48 of these CMP 170HX GPUs for around $150 each. Now, I'm seeing listings and recently sold prices ranging from over $1,000 to more than $2,000, with one reported sale at $3,250! So what's causing this massive price increase? The CMP 170HX has 8GB of VRAM, but a software unlock is now allowing these GPUs to utilize up to 64GB of VRAM for AI inference. I've been working with Mr. Swamp7, who has been testing this on my 10-GPU CMP 170HX server. He's been running Llama/Kimi 2 successfully for multiple days, and the project is still being tested and stabilized. I'm also working on getting these GPUs running on GPU rental platforms. Vast.ai currently isn't working with my setup, but I'm working with SimplePod and Clore to see if the CMP 170HX can eventually be rented for AI workloads. My next test will be a server with: • 10x CMP 170HX GPUs • 64GB unlocked VRAM per GPU • 640GB total VRAM • Upgraded CPUs and RAM • SimplePod AI rental testing And there's potentially an even bigger development coming. We're also investigating whether the CMP 170HX PCIe interface can be modified from its current limited configuration to PCIe x16. A potential capacitor modification is being tested that could dramatically improve the capabilities of these GPUs for AI inference. If everything works, these GPUs could become extremely valuable for local AI, LLM inference, and GPU compute. I just unlocked something absolutely insane on the NVIDIA CMP 170HX. These GPUs were originally designed as cryptocurrency mining cards with only 8GB of VRAM. But thanks to a new CMP unlock, the 8GB CMP 170HX cards I've been testing can now operate with up to 64GB of VRAM, opening up a completely different use case: local AI and large language model inference. In this video, I'm testing 10x CMP 170HX GPUs inside a Gigabyte server and running a massive AI model with around 500GB of model data distributed across the GPUs. The results are surprising. The CMP 170HX obviously isn't as fast as an RTX 5090 in raw performance, but the massive amount of available VRAM changes the equation completely. With the right configuration, these GPUs can potentially run AI models that would be impossible to fit on a typical consumer GPU. I'm also talking about the major limitations and caveats I've discovered, including PCIe Gen 1 x4 connectivity, cooling at higher power limits, NVIDIA drivers, GPU identification, stability, and the current inability to properly rent these GPUs through platforms like Vast.ai. I'm also testing the difference between the 8GB Hynix memory versions and the 10GB Samsung memory versions, including the possibility of unlocking the 10GB cards to around 40GB of VRAM. Could the CMP 170HX become one of the most interesting budget GPUs for local AI and LLM inference? And could a future PCIe x16 modification make these GPUs even more powerful? There is still a lot to test. I bought 8× NVIDIA Tesla V100 16GB GPUs and built a massive GPU server with one goal: get it running on Vast.ai and see if these older data-center GPUs can actually make money renting out AI compute in 2026. The Tesla V100 launched back in 2017, but with 16GB of HBM2 memory and a relatively low used-market price, I wanted to see if these old GPUs could still compete in today's AI GPU rental market. In this video, I install eight Tesla V100 16GB GPUs into my Gigabyte GPU server, upgrade the system with dual Intel Xeon Gold 6152 CPUs, 256GB of DDR4 ECC RAM, and Samsung NVMe storage. I then attempt to install Vast.ai and get the server verified and ready for GPU rentals. Unfortunately, things don't go exactly as planned. The Vast.ai installation fails during the PyTorch/CUDA testing process because of compatibility issues with the older Tesla V100 GPUs. I also run into NVIDIA driver compatibility problems and discover that I can't simply use the newest driver. After some troubleshooting, I find a potential workaround: temporarily installing an RTX 3080 to get the machine through the Vast.ai verification process before swapping the Tesla V100 GPUs back into the server. Now the big question is whether this 8× Tesla V100 GPU server can actually get rented on Vast.ai and generate enough revenue to justify the cost of the hardware, electricity, and time spent building it.
