I have WAY too many small Bitcoin miners sitting around… and honestly, I haven't been turning most of them on.

In this video I'm cleaning up my mining area, going through some of the small ASICs and solo-mining devices I've accumulated, and explaining why I've shifted so much of my focus toward AI GPU hardware.

It's summertime, these miners generate a ton of heat, electricity isn't free, and the economics of small-scale Bitcoin mining and solo mining have become increasingly difficult.

That doesn't mean I think these devices are useless.

For some people, they're a fun way to learn about Bitcoin mining, run a node, experiment with solo mining, or even use the heat during the winter. I've personally used devices like the Avalon Q as heaters while mining Bitcoin at the same time.

But there's a big difference between having fun with a small miner and expecting it to be a profitable mining operation.

And as I continue moving more toward AI GPU servers and GPU rental, a lot of these smaller miners are simply ending up sitting on shelves.

So… I might as well start giving some of them away.

I started selling my NVIDIA 170HX GPUs after asking the community whether it was finally time to sell — and things have gotten pretty crazy.

Bitcoin ...mining has been getting absolutely brutal.

Bitcoin has fallen dramatically from its previous highs, mining profitability has been squeezed, difficulty and competition remain intense, and expensive electricity is forcing more miners to shut down or leave the industry.

So why am I still expanding my Bitcoin mining operation?

In this video, I take a look at the current Bitcoin mining landscape, Bitcoin hashrate, ASIC miner efficiency, electricity costs, mining profitability and why so many miners are struggling to survive.

I also talk about the miners that are becoming unprofitable around 8¢/kWh, why efficiency is becoming more important than ever, and why older ASICs are increasingly being pushed offline.

But there's another side to the story.

I recently bought six additional S21 XP Bitcoin miners, adding roughly 1.7 PH/s to my operation. I'm now around 5.7 PH/s, with more hashpower coming online.

I'm also changing my strategy.

Instead of immediately selling the Bitcoin I'm mining, I'm now planning to mine and hold Bitcoin, potentially accumulating around 1 BTC over the coming months while paying the electricity costs out of pocket.

Is this a terrible idea?

Or could the current Bitcoin mining downturn eventually create some of the best opportunities for miners who have cheap electricity, efficient hardware and enough cash flow to survive?

Should I sell all of my GPUs right now?

NVIDIA has raised prices on its RTX 50-series GPUs, and I'm seeing the effects spill into the used GPU market. RTX 30-series cards, RTX 4090s, RTX 5090s, NVIDIA 170HXs and other GPUs have all become significantly more valuable, leaving me with a big question: is it finally time to sell the shovels?

I've been heavily involved in GPU mining for years, and now I've moved into GPU rental and AI compute. My 4090 and 5090 systems are currently rented on Vast.ai, while my 170HX, 3090 and other GPU servers are also seeing strong demand.

So what makes more sense?

Do I sell my older GPUs while prices are high and take the cash?

Do I reinvest into newer PCIe Gen 5 GPUs?

Do I move into RTX Pro GPUs with ECC memory?

Do I buy more RTX 5090s?

Or should I simply hold the cash and wait for a potential downturn in the AI compute and GPU rental market?

I'm also looking at the potential unlocks for NVIDIA CMP 50HX cards and whether these older GPUs can become useful for AI inference, LLMs or even Pearl mining.

And then there are my 170HX cards. Should I sell them as-is, or potentially modify them for higher PCIe lane functionality and potentially increase their value?

There are A LOT of options right now.

This video is basically me thinking out loud about the current GPU market, AI compute boom, GPU rental demand, used GPU prices, NVIDIA's price increases and whether it's better to sell the shovels during a gold rush.

NVIDIA GPU prices are going absolutely crazy, with the RTX 5090 reportedly reaching around $4,700 and other RTX 50-series GPUs seeing major price increases.

What does this mean for AI GPU rental?

In this video, we look at the massive increase in NVIDIA GPU prices, the RTX 5090 market, GPU rental demand, Vast.ai pricing, AI compute, local LLMs, and whether GPU rental prices could eventually increase as the cost of buying new hardware continues to rise.

In today's video, I'm testing my NVIDIA 170HX GPUs for memory errors after running into repeated CUDA, Docker, kernel and UVM issues while renting them out for AI workloads.

A big thank you to Mr. Craig for recommending GPU-Zelenograd's Memtest Vulkan. He purchased 170HX GPUs that showed memory errors and suggested I use the same software to test the 170HX GPUs I'm selling.

One of the GPUs I tested showed multiple memory errors, while the other GPUs tested so far were passing the standard test. I'm continuing to test the rest of my cards before reaching a final conclusion.

I'm also going to test the 170HX GPUs on Vast.ai to see whether a different software/kernel environment performs better than SimplePod.

If you own a 170HX, I highly recommend testing your own cards and checking for memory errors before assuming every CUDA or kernel crash is caused by defective VRAM.

⚠️ NOTE: This video documents my testing and observations. I'm not claiming that every 170HX has defective memory or that all SimplePod issues are caused by hardware. More testing is needed.

I've been running these 170HX systems for AI GPU rentals, but I've been dealing with kernel errors, GPU errors, failed Docker instances, potential PCIe issues, and questions surrounding the GPU unlock software and drivers.

In this video, I'm troubleshooting one of my Gigabyte 170HX servers, replacing GPUs, checking the PCIe slots, reseating hardware, and eventually discovering that the server was running a very old BIOS.

I also update the BIOS remotely through the BMC and see if moving from the old R15 BIOS to the newer R26 version helps solve the stability problems.

I'm also dealing with another 170HX server that is currently rented, so I don't want to shut it down while the customer is still actively using the GPU.

I'll also give you an update on my 8x Tesla V100 16GB GPU server, which I've moved over to Vast.ai after previously dealing with port and other setup issues.

These 170HX GPUs have been extremely interesting for AI inference, especially with their large amount of VRAM, but getting everything stable in a multi-GPU server environment has been a learning experience.
